On July 7, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI promulgated the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum, with which he permitted the Gregorian-Tridentine Rite as the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite of the Mass. Since then Masses can be celebrated in Catholic churches according to the Roman Missal of Pope Saint Pius V and Blessed Pope John XXIII.
